Television can be a double edged sword when it comes to glamorizing certain professions. Sure recent crime show trends have made it popular to become a forensic scientist and work in a crime lab or on a crime scene team. However, it’s also increased the competition for spots, making it more and more important to have a forensics science degree as well as relevant work or internship experience.
The field of forensic science has exploded over the years. Gone are the days when only coroners were associated with the term. Today there are forensic scientists working in crime scene investigation, forensic labs, forensic anthropogy , and even criminal psychology. Computer forensics is another rapidly growing field, with everyone from police departments to the CIA hiring experts with degrees. That also means there’s been a growth in the need for forensic instructors, for those who have always wanted to be a college professor.
Scientists who have extensive experience in labs and research can make the switch to forensics by enrolling in an advanced degree program, such as a Masters. This also works for those who want to switch careers from general law enforcement to working forensics or those who want to leave traditional science for employment in the criminal justice field.

If you’re ever at a loss of something to do to kill a few hours, consider heading to a local costume shop and browsing. This is best done when you have an actual invitation to a costume party or ball, but it can also be a fun if you don’t actually need a costume. Just make sure in the latter case that you don’t monopolize the time of the store clerks when they could be helping paying customers.
The appeal of hunting for a costume is exploring the possibilities of dress up. Other than the occasional black tie affair, most adults don’t get the chance to play dress up or play with their identity. Searching thru superhero, historical figures, and Mascot Costumes can bring out undiscovered aspects of your psyche.
Whenever you start to imagine yourself as “other” you permit your mind to stretch and grow. The exploration of identity is ideal for this exercise and combining it with the child’s love of costume is a great recipe for a fun afternoon. Costuming with friends or a significant other can add another layer of discovery to the activity. And if you find the perfect costume there’s nothing stopping you from renting it anyway and wearing having an impromptu costume dinner or evening at home.

Even if you don’t have a child of your own, you probably remember enough of your childhood to know how scary things can get after dark. In fact, fear of the dark is one of the few ingrained fears that seem to be shared by all humans. Unlike adults, kids don’t have the capacity to rationally consider the threats faced in their home. They are more likely to turn the slightness noise or movement into a massive life-threatening monster than an adult.
Investing in a ge led night light can give those kids some peace of mind. Having the comforting presence of a light, however small, can make the noises, shadows, and fears much more manageable. It can also light the way for older kids who need to make trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Lights come in different shapes and colors so that kids can be comforted with their favorite cartoon characters, superheros, or simple shapes like footballs or snowmen.
Of course, night lights don’t just help the kids. Parents will be spared countless hours of comforting a scared child or dealing with injuries caused by tripping over toys in the middle of the night. They also won’t be called upon to walk a child to the bathroom in the middle of the night. In fact, offering a night light as a gift for parents with small children is probably one of the best things a friend or family member can do.
