The History of Tennis

Tennis has millions of fans from across the world and is one of the sports where individual athlete’s fan bases can extend far beyond their city or country of origin. It is extremely common for people to develop a favorite player from a different country and the rivalry competition base is generally oriented toward the players and not community versus community. Though there are definitely populations who support only their homegrown players. However, favorite players and fan bases are established, the fascination has been going on since about the 12th century.

Most tennis historians will agree that tennis likely began in France in the 12th century. This accepted original version of the sport had the players swatting and striking the ball with the palms of their hands. Much later in the sixteenth century rackets were developed and added to the game and it became known at that time as the sport of tennis . By then it was popular in England as well as in France though it was only played indoors and the ball was hit off of a wall. This could be considered the common ancestor of racquetball and tennis, but that’s of course only a fun reference as racquetball is a twentieth century invention, possible subspecies of golf.

One of the most famous early supports of tennis is King Henry VIII and the version for which he was a fan is now considered to be when real tennis entered the scene. The sport continued to evolve over the years and develop into the game it is today. With major internationally based tournaments such as the Wimbledon tennis championship as well as other Grand Slam tournaments, the sport enjoys great popularity and support now than it has in its history. Though from its beginnings, tennis has been a favorite and one of the common sports to be seen in various social settings.
